Project: Lincoln & Columbia Counties

Lincoln & Columbia Counties

Job Overview

Bridge Replacement Project – GA/SC Line, Little River. This bridge replacement project on the Georgia/South Carolina line over the Little River consisted of six (6) 96-inch-diameter drilled shafts ranging from 100 to 115 linear feet in depth. Each shaft location required drilling through approximately 30 feet (+/-) of existing concrete and rebar footing to achieve the required rock socket.

1. The Approach

Working off of floating barges, the team developed safe and efficient methods to advance casing through the existing footing to the top of rock, then remove 25′ + required rock sockets.

2. The Solution

Through collaboration with Scott Bridge, it was determined that it was more cost-effective for the owner to drill through the previously constructed footings rather than demolish them and restart the foundation work. Russo installed 102-inch permanent casing through the existing concrete footings to the top of rock and installed 25-foot rock sockets.

3. The Results

The project was completed in a timely manner despite the challenges of drilling through existing concrete, rebar, and 25,000-psi bedrock.
